Hello, My name is Madeline Brik, I am working on this project individually and my mind is currently spiraling out of control with new ideas and content for this two minute film opening. With so many different directions to go in from superheroes to my favorite soap opera dramas, I knew I had to choose a route that would speak to people on a different level beyond the superficial. I want to open minds and spark conversations.
Growing up, murder mysteries were something I never truly considered my favorite. I found them scary and confusing. Memories of me nagging my parents to understand are running through my head when I think about murder mystery movies "Mom, why did he do that?" "I don't get the ending, what does it mean?" The themes were beyond my comprehension, but now as a 18 year old senior in high school, I finally have a grasp and I'm excited to give it a shot.
Choosing a genre with commentary on the social condition is my main goal in this process. I want to create something where human actions and emotions are analyzed with questions concerning motive, psychological background and social environment. I decided on the murder mystery genre, to focus on the thrill and suspense that comes along when playing with the dark unconscious thoughts and feelings that almost everyone has.
My movie should open viewers eyes to the truth behind the madness of people and should give them a glimpse inside of who they are behind the curtain of social constructs. My characters will hold symbolic meaning, one representing society, one representing the truth and one representing the victim of it all. In essence my film will be dealing with the universal fight of man versus society and man versus self.
I am going to research past murder mystery cases and look deep into the psychoanalysis of the murderer and what their purpose was. To be cynical, to get revenge, to make a point? My plot and characters will be based off of my researched case with possibly a spin of my own to put some individuality into the suspense.
